Digital and Web Publishing

Offered are undergraduate full-time and part-time digital and web publishing studies. The development in modern technologies has influenced phenomena and processes related to the book. These phenomena and processes are analysed in their historical context, with a respect for the achievements of past generations. At the same time, we are receptive to new forms of written communication and find in them a continuation of earlier forms. The program of digital and web publishing studies encompasses the following elements:

  1. Editing (among others: Fundamentals of editing, Editing of digital publications, Sources of information in editorial work, Text editing, Creative writing, Specialized translation, Copyright in publishing);
  2. Aesthetic and functional aspects of publications (among others: Book typography and graphic design, Contemporary book art, Book illustrations, Introduction to the study of culture);
  3. Communicating (among others: Social communication, Contemporary reading, Digital media users, Book marketing and promotion, Evaluation of website functionality);
  4. Digital resources (among others: Management of e-document collections, Information science, E-publication market, Documents’ evaluation and selection, ).

An integral part of the study programme are classes in a computer laboratory. In this way students carry out projects in the following classes: Advanced options of application programs (text editors, programs used in presentations, databases), Working in InDesign.
Students get acquainted with the processes of digital publications – from their creation, through their distribution, storing and archiving to their reception and use. They learn what the creators, receivers and users of such publications do as well as get to know the tasks of the institutions which process and disseminate the information in various forms and formats. Digital and net publishing programmes have been developed to meet the needs of the current job market.
Students will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree in digital and web publishing.
Digital and web publishing graduates will be competent in the information sector, who will know how to address publishing market challenges posed by developments in new technologies. They can seek employment in publishing houses specialising both in traditional and digital publications (of books and journals), work for Internet portals, companies digitising publications, in digital libraries, scientific institutions opening repositories such as Open Access, Internet bookstores, publishing, marketing and promotional departments of various companies. Anyone interested in continuing their study can do so by enrolling on to the postgraduate studies in digital and web publishing or on to the Publisher of digital products postgraduate course, both offered in the Institute of Information and Library Science.
Digital and web publishing postgraduate studies
For the postgraduate studies in digital and internet publishing programme, special emphasis is put on aspects of communication in the Internet environment as well as on the electronic forms of publishing, hence postgraduate students are acquainted with the specific communication in the Internet (from issues related to preparing texts for the Internet to web information architecture), the newest technologies used in electronic editing, issues of disseminating digital publications.
The acquired knowledge and competencies also enable them to analyse phenomena in the digital space of the written word with contemplation of the theory and methods of the modern book and of information sciences as well as widely understood digital humanities. During their studies students acquire systematic knowledge of communication processes in the digital environment, are acquainted with the typology of digital resources and the most important theories, methods and tools that make it possible to carry research from various perspectives.
Graduates of postgraduate studies in digital and net publishing will have detailed knowledge and extensive practical skills in professionally preparing publications (printed and digital) made accessible through various channels of distribution. They will also be familiar with the social, cultural and technological aspects of modern publishing processes. They will know how to use their knowledge in practice while preparing publications of various kinds (including the ones aimed at mobile devices), planning activities leading to their creation and dissemination. In carrying out specific publishing tasks they will know how to effectively uses various information resources and modern technological tools (among others professional computer programs). They will know how to ensure the high quality of publications considering both their content and their informational and functional value, adjusting their forms and formats to the needs of the modern receiver and be mindful of changes taking place in modern reading culture. An important skill enhanced on the programme is an ability to assess the quality of publications: thoroughly broadening their knowledge of the book aesthetics students gain competencies which allow them to assess the typographical and graphic content of the book.

Graduates of postgraduate studies in digital and web publishing are equipped to work in professional publishing companies as well as with widely understood digital communication and electronic media. They will understand how to use new technologies in the process of preparing and disseminating publications, both traditional and electronic, as well as how to exploit the web environment informational potentials in practice. They will be aware of the dynamics of the development and changes in the publishing market and digital media and hence they will be aware of the need to continuously enhance their knowledge and develop their competencies.
With the acquired theoretical and methodological knowledge foundation they will be prepared to continue their research for a doctoral degree.
